Fuchs Foundation Antarctic Expedition 2010
Fuchs Foundation Antarctic Expedition 2010
Welcome to my website. My name is Lisa Wood and I am a primary school teacher in East London. I am one of four teachers who have been selected by the Fuchs Foundation to join their expedition to Antarctica. In November 2010 we will be leaving behind the chilly UK weather to go and spend 5 weeks camping in isolated locations in the even chillier climate of Antarctica! The reason? To create teaching resources and carry out educational science research that will help inspire a generation of future scientists. It's going to be a tough slog but very worthwhile!
Schools and universities are struggling to attract students to study science and geography as they are perceived as dull and hard work. The primary objective of the Fuchs Foundation is to reach out to young people through their teachers who will inspire them to achieve their true potential in these subject areas.
Over a career, the average teacher is likely to be responsible for the education of about 10,000 children. If the Fuchs Foundation gives an inspirational experience to just 100 teachers, it will influence the lives of 1 million young people!
‘Inspiring Teachers…Changing Lives’
Once our team heads out to Antarctica we will be exploring places where possibly no humans have been before! We will use satellite phones and email to communicate regularly with not only our schools but schools across the country to let them know what we are up to and how our science investigations are progressing. For the whole trip we will be completely self sufficient and we will be camping in sub zero temperatures. Not only that, we’ll be man hauling our equipment with us all of the way!
In order for the trip to happen I need to raise £12 000 to contribute towards the costs. If you would like to sponsor me in this amazing endeavour, please click on the Just Giving link below or contact me at lisahwood@hotmail.co.uk.
Thank you!
